“What kind, kings, one hundreds or lights?” The clerk hesitated and then added. “And I’m going to have to ask you to show me some ID.”

“Kings,” Casper said as he stepped up to the counter with his driver’s license in hand, taking a brief second to stick his tongue out at Tia.

The clerk still hesitated for a moment. “I can’t let you buy them if you’re buying them for her.”

“They’re for me!” Casper suddenly went from a one to a ten.

“I’m going to go ahead and do it this time, but you guys need to have your situation a little better under control before you get to the counter next time.”

Tia could not believe the angry look Casper had on his face as he watched the girl pack the goods in a bag. How could such a small event change him from the person who had just been so kind and caring to his grandmother to the person who now looked ready to reach across the counter and strike a woman who was simply trying to do her job?

“Next time, just shut the fuck up and mind your business, bitch,” Casper said as he picked the bag up from the counter, staring at the woman in a way that seemed to challenge her to say anything.

Tia grabbed him by the arm and pulled him towards the exit. She was embarrassed and shocked at the same time.

“Punk ass bitch needs to get some respect when she don’t know who the fuck she’s talking to! Minimum-wage-ass-bitch!” He continued to name call and stay
